The missionary functions of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have evolved over time, reflecting changes in society's expectations and demands [1]. In their beginnings, in the 11th and 12th centuries, universities focused on teaching and the training of the intellectual elite, establishing what became known as the first mission, that of education, which focused on the transmission of knowledge and skills through formal education. With the founding of the University of Berlin in 1810, a new university model was introduced that promoted the idea that the generation of new knowledge from scientific research should also be a function of the university. Its adoption by universities in countries such as England, the United States and Japan marked the establishment of the second mission of higher education institutions, that of scientific research and, therefore, the generation of knowledge [2].en-US
