Tourism Competitiveness from the Perspective of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability: A Literature Review

| dc.description | Objective: This study aimed to examine the impact of corporate social responsibility and sustainability on the competitiveness of the tourism sector in order to address the following question: What positive effects do corporate social responsibility and sustainability produce on tourism competitiveness?Design/Methodology: A qualitative literature review was conducted using an empirical, analytical, and exploratory approach, following an established methodological process that included research design, document selection, participant consideration, data collection, and information analysis. The databases Scopus, DOAJ, and EBSCOhost were consulted, yielding an initial sample of 298 articles, which was subsequently refined to 51 studies: 39 empirical and 12 theoretical. These were assessed through content analysis.Findings: The results indicate that corporate social responsibility and sustainability generate impacts that enhance both sectoral and firm-level competitiveness in tourism. Specifically, they contribute to greater shared value creation, stronger relationships with stakeholders, and more continuous monitoring of the external environment.Conclusions: The analysis concludes that corporate social responsibility and sustainability play two strategic roles within the tourism sector. On the one hand, they help organizations address the environmental impacts associated with their activities. On the other hand, they function as drivers that strengthen competitiveness at both the organizational and sectoral levels.Originality: This study demonstrates the positive impacts that arise from the effective implementation of corporate social responsibility and sustainability, making it relevant for academics, researchers, and industry practitioners seeking to develop strategies that further expand these benefits. Additionally, it proposes a research agenda that identifies the factors influencing competitiveness according to different types of tourism organizations (e.g., hotels, restaurants, rural accommodations, travel agencies), as existing literature tends to generalize these effects across the sector. | en-US |
| dc.description | Objetivo: conocer el impacto de la responsabilidad social corporativa y la sostenibilidad en la competitividad del sector turismo, con el fin de responder al interrogante: ¿qué impactos positivos generan la responsabilidad social corporativa y la sostenibilidad en la competitividad del sector turismo?Diseño/metodología: se realizó una revisión de la literatura de carácter cualitativa con un enfoque empírico, analítico y exploratorio, a través del proceso metodológico establecido: diseño, documentos, participantes, recolección de datos y análisis de información. Se indago en las bases Scopus, DOAJy EBSCOhost obteniendo un total de 298 artículos, que terminaron siendo 51: 39 empíricos y 12 reflexivos, los cuales se evaluaron a través de la técnica de análisis de contenido.Resultados: se evidenció que, a través de la responsabilidad social corporativa y la sostenibilidad, se derivan impactos que impulsan tanto la competitividad del sector como de las empresas turísticas, aumentando la generación de valor compartido y el relacionamiento con los stakeholders, al igual que la permanente vigilancia del entorno.Conclusiones: se concluye que, la responsabilidad social corporativa y la sostenibilidad cumplen dos funciones estratégicas dentro del sector: por un lado, permiten afrontar los impactos medioambientales derivados de la actividad empresarial; y por otro, actúan como motores que fortalecen la competitividad tanto de las empresas turísticas como del sector.Originalidad: el estudio permite demostrar los impactos que se derivan de la adecuada aplicabilidad de la responsabilidad social corporativa y la sostenibilidad, siendo de interés para académicos, investigadores y el sector, en aras de formular estrategias que amplíen estos impactos. De igual forma, el estudio plantea una agenda investigativa en la cual se determinan los factores que impulsan la competitividad del sector, según tipo de organización (hoteles, restaurantes, fincas, agencias de viaje, etc.), debido a que la literatura generaliza dichos impactos. | es-ES |
