| dc.description | In the dry Caribbean of Colombia, the climate and conventional soil management practices increase the soil's vulnerability to degradation, requiring strategies to preserve its functions and long-term sustainability. Agroecology promotes the use of green manures as an alternative to improve soil health by increasing biodiversity, increasing soil organic matter, and providing protection against direct exposure to solar radiation and water; however, evidence of their effects in this region remains limited. The objective of this study was to characterize soil properties in 11 municipalities within four subregions of the Magdalena department and to evaluate their temporal variation following the establishment and incorporation of green manures. The methodology involved establishing 30 experimental units arranged in a complete randomized block design, with four green manure species (Phaseolus vulgaris, Crotalaria juncea, Pueraria phaseoloides, and Zea mays). Soil properties were assessed before and after biomass incorporation using variance analysis, generalized linear models, and Pearson's correlation analysis. The results showed no significant changes in physical soil properties; however, electrical conductivity (EC) differed significantly after biomass incorporation (p = 0.002). C. juncea demonstrated the highest biomass production (up to 69942 kg ha⁻¹) and the greatest adaptability in three of the four subregions, while P. phaseoloides performed best in the Río subregion. The analysis identified subregion-specific correlations between soil properties and biomass production. In conclusion, incorporating green manures results in partial improvements in soil properties. However, spatial variability in soil responses suggests that its effectiveness depends on the species used and local conditions, highlighting the need for sustained implementation to achieve long-term improvements in the soil system. | en-US |
