Effects on the efficiency of an H Darrieus hydrokinetic turbine due to geometric modifications on the blades
Abstract
This work finds a way of improving the performance of the H Darrieus hydrokinetic turbine in generating electrical energy. Five different geometrical modifications were applied to the airfoil NACA0018 to evaluate the effects on the efficiency through numerical simulations. The commercial program used to carry out the study was ANSYS® V22.2, the CAD design of the different modifications were done in the SpaceClaim module, the mesh was constructed in ICEM CFD where rectangular elements were implemented to represent the domains and lastly, the fluid-dynamics simulation was run in the module Fluent. The result variable was set to be the torque coefficient and the torque, variable from which the efficiency of each modification case can be calculated. All case results were compared with the standard case. Between the most relevant results, it was found that the circular opening resulted with an efficiency of 51.88%, while the standard case resulted with an efficiency of 45.16 %, this means that the circular opening improves the turbine’s efficiency in 15% in respect to the standard case.
